Women's Golf Beats Ohio Northern in Florida

KISSIMMEE, FLA.  --  The Trine University women's golf team competed against Ohio Northern University in a match play format and defeated the Polar Bears, 15-6, at Orange Lake Resort in Kissimmee, Fla.

The first round was an 18-hole match play consisting of partners playing a six-hole scramble, six-hole best ball, and a six-hole alternate shot. One point was awarded for each segment.

Following the first round, Trine was leading ONU, 8-1.  The teams of senior Lyndsey Welper (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) and sophomore Jenna Doumont (Burlington, Ky./Villa Madonna Academy) and freshman Lily Williamson (Colfax, Ind./Western Boone) along with fellow freshman Maire Sullivan (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth) both earned three points after posting the lower score total in each of the segments.  The duo of sophomore Karlee Fackler (Fort Wayne, Ind./Heritage) and junior Olivia Phillips (Muncie, Ind./Muncie) captured the remaining two team points to give the Thunder the sizeable lead.

The second round of the day was composed of individual nine-hole matches. One point was awarded for the front nine winner and another point for the back nine winner.

Phillips and Williamson posted the lower score against their opponent on both the front and back nine to claim the maximum of two team points.  Sullivan bested her opponent on one of the nine-hole matches and then tied on the second to earn one-and-a-half points.  Doumont added a team point by finishing ahead on a nine-hole segment and Fackler rounded out the team scoring with a half point by tying her opponent for nine holes as Trine went on to the overall victory by the final of 15-6.

Trine will be idle until the end of March when the Thunder travel to take on Hope (Mich.) College in another match-play format at The Ravines Golf Club in Saugatuck, Mich.  The two-team event is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
