Grace Dubec Ties for First at Season-Opening Tournament

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University women's golf team was the first at the university to compete in the regular season for the 2023-24 school year when they hosted the Trine Women's Kick-Off Classic at Zollner Golf Course on Tuesday. The event took slightly longer than usual after a torrential downpour interrupted the action with just a handful of holes left to play. After about a 45-minute delay, the teams were able to return to the course and finish their rounds.

Grace College was able to take home the team trophy thanks to a combined score of 323. Indiana University East was second at 328, and the Thunder placed third overall with a team score of 344, the best score of the NCAA DIII squads and Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) teams in attendance.

Junior Grace Dubec tied for first place on the player leaderboard with a score of 76. Dubec, Morgan Yates from Alma College and Grace May from Grace College were the three who shared the individual medalist honor. "The conditions got tough near the end of the round, but our team kept a great attitude and finished strong!" Dubec commented post-match. "I am very proud to represent Trine with my team in the first tournament of the year!"

Freshman Mae Norman finished in a tie for 20th overall with a score of 87 in her first career event. Sophomore Calley Ruff matched with an 87 herself. Junior Bailey Bravata carded a 94 and sophomore Sophie Argyle was just behind with a 95.

Freshman Brayton Huffman and sophomore Grace Thiele paced the Trine "B" team, each of them with a score of 92.

It is a quick turnaround for the Thunder when they hit the road for the IU East Fall Invitational beginning on Friday, September 1 and concluding on September 2. The 36-hole tournament begins at 12 p.m. at Highland Lake Golf Course in Richmond, Indiana.
