Thunder Score Two in Third to Skate Past Cougars

ANGOLA, IND. -- The Trine women's hockey team came out on top of Chatham University after a flurry of goal scoring in the third period gave them the 2-1 victory.

The teams exchanged shots equally in the first period, but both goalies kept the game tied at zero. The Thunder's special teams also came through in the period killing off two Cougar powerplays.

The second period would end the same as the first with both teams entering the final intermission scoreless. During the period, however, the Thunder's offense began to gain an advantage. Trine outshot Chatham by 13-8 in the stanza.

In the final period, the defenses finally cracked. The Thunder scored first when freshman forwards Sierra Westner (Saginaw, Mich.) and Emily Moore (London, Ont.) moved the puck down the length of the ice. Westner passed the puck to Moore directly in front of the net and Moore finished off the play for her first goal of her career.

Chatham would respond with their own goal three minutes later. Cassidy Colhoun received a pass from her teammate and worked her way past the lone Trine defender left on the ice after an ill-timed line change. Colhoun converted for her eighth goal of the season.

Two minutes later the Trine would pull ahead for the final time. Freshman defender Bailey Goodwin (Fort Wayne, Ind.) picked up the loose puck in the defensive end of the ice and took it past the opposition to the offensive end. Once there, Goodwin passed the puck to freshman forward Eryn Isaacson (Fenton, Mich.) put it through the back door. The goal was Isaacson's second of the season and her first game-winner of her career.

Sophomore Molly Scarborough (Ramsey, Minn.) played spectacularly in the game. Allowing only the lone goal and finishing the game with 25 saves. The victory is her second of the season.

Trine will once again take on Chatham tomorrow, January 6 at 2 p.m.
