Women's Hockey Defeated on Late Power-Play Goal

ASHLAND, WIS. -- The Trine women's hockey team scored first, but a late power-play goal gave Northland College the 2-1 victory.

The game started as a defensive struggle, with both teams' goaltenders holding on to shutout bids after the first period. Sophomore Molly Scarborough (Ramsey, Minn.) got the start for the Thunder in net and ended the game with 26 saves, ten of which came in the first period.

In the seventh minute of the second period, the Thunder tallied the first goal of the game. Freshman forward Katie Plyer (Layton, Utah) scored the goal, her second of the season, while freshman blueliner Bailey Goodwin (Fort Wayne, Ind.) was credited with the assist.

Unfortunately, Trine would not hold onto the 1-0 lead for long, as just 14 seconds later the Jills responded with their own goal. The teams would take the 1-1 tie into the third period.

The contest seemed destined for overtime, with the score remaining tied into the 18th minute of the final period. With just over two minutes remaining in regulation, Trine gave Northland a power-play opportunity. The Jills took advantage, scoring the game-winner just five seconds into the attempt.

The Thunder fall to 2-9 in the NCHA and 4-10-1 overall following the 2-1 loss. They will face off with Northland again tomorrow, January 27 with puck drop scheduled for 3 p.m.
