Thunder Ride Two-Goal Third to Tie

ANGOLA, Ind. -- Two goals in the third period give the Trine University women's hockey team their first tie of the season against Marian University with the score of 2-2.

The Sabres struck first in the contest when in the fifth minute of the second period they came away with a steal in the Thunder's defensive zone. The converted it into a goal off of a deflection in front of the goal. Marian would take the 1-0 lead into the second intermission.

The Thunder responded in the third period. Their first goal came in the sixth minute of the period. The team won the center ice faceoff and passed it through the defense before sophomore Sula Argyris (Woodhaven, Mich.) took the puck into the offensive zone and fired off a shot. The opposition made the save but left the rebound in front of the open net where sophomore Olivia Coyne (Allison Park, Pa.) finished off the play for her first goal of the season. Freshman Devin Dzumaryk (Milford, Mich.) recorded an assist on the play.

Trine took the lead just two minutes later when freshman Ava Russano (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) stole the puck behind the Sabre's net and scored the wraparound goal. The shorthanded goal was Russano's second of the season and gave the Thunder the 2-1 lead.

The lead was shortlived as just 29 seconds later Marian came away with the equalizer.

Both teams would go scoreless the rest of the contest including five minutes of overtime play to finish with the 2-2 tie.

Freshman Anna Cvitkovich (Olmsted, Ohio) got the start in net for Trine and finished the contest with 28 saves.

Trine improves to 3-3-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) following the tie. The Thunder will once again host the Sabres tomorrow, Nov. 17 with the game scheduled for 2 p.m.
