Thunder Defeat Visiting Foresters

ANGOLA, Ind. -- Two power-play goals helped give the Trine University women's hockey team a 3-2 victory over visiting Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) opponent Lake Forest College.

The Thunder picked up the early lead in the fourth minute of the contest when sophomore forward Emily Moore (London, Ontario) capitalized on a power-play opportunity by putting a rebounded shot into the backdoor. The goal was her first of the season and featured assists from sophomores Kirsten Vandenheuvel (Denfield, Ontario) and Sula Argyris (Woodhaven, Mich.).

The Foresters knotted the game at one with a power-play goal of their own at the halfway point of the second period.

Two minutes later Trine would retake the lead. Freshman forward Ava Russano (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) came out of a scrum behind the Lake Forest net and passed the puck up the boards. Sophomore blueliner Kailey Cameron (Nowthen, Minn.) collected it and skated out to the point where she took a long shot at goal. The puck found its way through the defense and into the back of the net to put the Thunder up 2-1.

The team added to their lead in the third minute of the final period with their second power-play goal of the evening. Following an offensive zone faceoff win, Cameron ended up with the puck at the point and passed it along to Argyris who fired a shot toward the net. Vandenheuvel deflected it by the goaltender to give Trine the 3-1 lead.

A few minutes later the Foresters pulled back within one but would get no closer as the Thunder withstood an extra attacker in the final minute of the contest and came away with the 3-2 victory.

The win is Trine's first against Lake Forest and improves their record to 5-3-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the NCHA.

Junior Molly Scarborough (Ramsey, Minn.) got the start in net and finished the contest with 31 saves to earn her third win of the season.

The Thunder will take on Lake Forest again tomorrow, once again at home with puck drop scheduled for 2 p.m.
