Women's Hockey Hangs Tough but Falls to Visiting Saints

ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Trine University women's hockey team played tough with the visiting squad from the College of St. Scholastica but were unable to pull off the upset of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) second-seeded opposition, losing 2-0.

Both team's defenses showed up from the start, with neither team allowing a goal in the opening stanza, despite combining for 20 shots in the first period. The Thunder headed into the first intermission with the slight offensive edge leading shots 11-9 but remaining tied on the scoreboard at zero.

The Saints broke the tie just a minute and a half into the second period as senior Alexia Klaas took a shot while falling to the ice and snuck it past the Trine netminder. The goal was the lone of the period and the Thunder entered the second intermission trailing 1-0.

The Thunder had to kill off two penalties in the third, stealing four precious minutes of attack, but still put the press on the opposition throughout the period. St. Scholastica put the game away in the 19th minute scoring their second goal to take their final 2-0 lead.

Junior Molly Scarborough (Ramsey, Minn.) got the start in net for Trine and despite allowing the two goals ended the game with 23 saves and a strong showing.

Trine falls to 6-7-1 overall and 4-4-1 in the NCHA following the loss. They will take on the Saints again tomorrow, Jan. 19 with puck drop scheduled for 2 p.m.
