Wild Third Period Ends in Another Draw for Women's Hockey

ANGOLA, Ind. -- Both teams combined for four goals in the third period but neither the Trine University women's hockey team or visiting St. Olaf College could come out with a lead and the game ended in a 2-2 tie.

Both teams were unable to find the back of the net through the first two periods. The Thunder took an edge in the shots on goal category, however, leading 31-21 heading into the second intermission.

The scoring finally got underway in the seventh minute of the third period, with Trine striking first. Junior defender Jade Pandres (Eagle River, Alaska) scored the goal with seniors Sydney Hernalsteen (Macomb, Mich.) and Katie Plyer (Layton, Utah) adding assists.

The 1-0 lead lasted just over two minutes for the Thunder before the Oles responded with their first goal of the contest, knotting the score at 1-1.

Trine responded with their second goal of the contest 90 seconds later to take back the lead at 2-1. Freshman Makena Thompson (Anchorage, Alaska) tallied the goal, her first of the season, while Hernalsteen added another assist along with senior Bailey Goodwin (Fort Wayne, Ind.).

The Thunder looked poised to take the lead to completion as they continued to lead heading into the final two minutes of the contest, but the Oles came up with their second goal of the contest to tie the game for the final time at 2-2.

Sophomore Emily Nettesheim (Harland, Wis.) got the first start of her career for Trine and finished the contest with 33 saves in the tie.

The Thunder finish the day with a 3-4-3 overall record. They will take the ice again tomorrow, Sunday, January 5 when they travel to face Aurora University in a non-conference contest. Opening puck-drop is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Central Time.
