Third Period Scoring Spree Downs Thunder

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Trine University women's hockey team dropped the second of a back-to-back versus the Oles of St. Olaf College on Saturday by a score of 4-1.

Trine falls to 1-3 in the 2021-22 season, while St. Olaf remains unbeaten at 4-0.

Theresa DiMaggio [Shelby Township, Mich.] put the Thunder on top in the opening period with a goal at the 12:15 mark in the first period. DiMaggio went top shelf on her own in the offensive zone passed the Ole keeper. Hannah Nelson [Libertyville, Ill.] played it forward to DiMaggio from the right of Trine's own net to pick up the assist.

The Thunder were able to win 12 of the 16 first half faceoffs and outshot St. Olaf 17-14 in the first 20 minutes of action.

Trine showed tremendous defensive prowess in the second period after they were outshot 18-7, but retained the 1-0 advantage. Goalkeeper Emily Nettesheim [Hartland, Wis.] was able to turn away all 18 to keep the Thunder in front.

Just 16 seconds into the third period, St. Olaf was able to draw even. A turnover in their own defensive ice led to a quick deflected puck to find the back of the net. From there, the Oles were off to the races with three more in the period.

St. Olaf took advantage of a power play opportunities and scored just as penalty time was running out to make it 2-1 and again to go up 3-1 when Trine had a woman off the ice. An empty net goal would be the nail in the coffin on the night.

Payton Hans [Johnson Creek, Wis.] led the Thunder with seven shots, with DiMaggio and Brandi Wilson [Fenton, Mich.] behind her with four apiece. Nettensheim wrapped up her night with 33 total saves.

Trine women's hockey goes on the road next weekend as well with a twin bill versus Concordia-Wisconsin on Friday, November 12 and Saturday, November 13.
