Two-Goal First not Enough for Women's Hockey

BOSTON, Mich. -- The Trine University women's hockey team scored a pair of goals in the first period to take a lead into the first intermission, but ultimately fell in the contest by the score of 3-2 to Stevenson University.

The Thunder struck first in the contest. Following a successful clear by the Mustangs, senior Kirsten Vandenheuvel (Denfield, Ontario) carried the puck back toward center ice before passing it off to freshman Payton Hans (Johnson Creek, Wis.) who carried it into the offensive zone. After a quick back and forth with senior Brandi Wilson (Fenton, Mich.), Hans returned the puck to the point where Vandenheuvel fired a shot true for the power play goal.

The team added to their lead in the final seconds of the period. After the puck went back and forth between freshman Madison Toor (Hartland, Mich.) and freshman Lea Connor (Huntington Beach, Calif.) the puck ended up in the hands of Wilson who went the rest of the way and beat the goalie for the goal.

Trine would head into the intermission with the 2-0 lead. The second period, however, was not kind to the Thunder, as Stevenson tallied three goals to take the lead in the 15th minute. The score would hold for the rest of the game and Trine would take the 3-2 loss.

Trine falls to 1-9 overall following the loss. They will travel to face Marian University in their next competition. The return to Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play is schedule to start at 8 p.m. ET on Friday, Dec. 3.
