Thunder Tame Sabres with Sweep

ANGOLA, Ind. -- Junior Gabrielle Hicks (Layton, Utah) led the way with a pair of points as the Trine University women's hockey team came back from a first period deficit to finish off the weekend sweep of visiting Marian University with a 2-1 victory.

The Sabres opened the scoring in the contest with a goal in the tenth minute of the first period and would hold on to the 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

In the waning minutes of the second period the Thunder were applying offensive pressure working the puck around the attacking zone, but Marian came up with a takeaway and attempted to clear the puck, freshman Abby Martin (Chippewa Falls, Wis.) ended up with the puck in the neutral zone and backed into the defensive zone before passing the puck across the ice to Hicks who quickly passed it back into the neutral zone. Junior Makena Thompson (Anchorage, Alaska) collected the pass and bumped it along to senior Brandi Wilson (Fenton, Mich.) who would skate deep into Sabre territory before banking a shot off the right post into net for a goal.

It would be the lone tally of the second period and the team would head to the final intermission tied at one.

A penalty in the second minute of the third period gave the Thunder their fifth power play opportunity of the contest. For the first time the team would convert the attempt. Freshman Payton Hans (Johnson Creek, Wis.) passed the puck from the point into the left faceoff circle where senior Kirsten Vandenheuvel (Denfield, Ontario) skated forward toward the net. Rather than firing off a shot, she would pass the puck across the face of the net to Hicks who was ready to cash in on the open net to give the team their first lead of the contest.

Sophomore Abbie Bost (Chelsea, Mich.) finished off the game, holding the opposition scoreless through the second and third periods on the back of a 28 save performance. The 2-1 victory is her first win of the season in net.

The Thunder improve to 4-9-1 overall following the victory. Their next contest is not scheduled until Sunday, January 2 when they will face off with Adrian College in a non-conference contest. The game will be played outdoors at Fifth Third Field in Toledo, Ohio as a part of Winterfest 2022. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
