Thunder Roar to 4-1 Win over Lions

HANCOCK, Mich. – The Trine University women's hockey team roared back with four unanswered goals to secure their sixth win of the season. The defeated their hosts from Finlandia University by the score of 4-1.

Neither team scored in the opening period but not for lack of effort on the Thunder's end of the ice. Trine outshot the opposition 16-6 in the period.

Three minutes into the second period, the Lions struck to break the stalemate in favor of home ice.

Trine responded just over a minute later. A penalty at 4:31 into the period gave the Thunder an advantage and a faceoff in the offensive zone. After sophomore Kailey Mleko won the puck back to the point, senior Gabrielle Hicks was able to fire a long range shot that found its way into the back of the net, knotting the game at one.

A minute and a half later the Mleko scored a goal of her own to give Trine their first lead of the day. Junior Madison Toor added an assist on the goal.

The team continued to pepper the home goalie but the game remained 2-1 for the second intermission. The Thunder outshot the Lions 19-7 in the period.

Trine continued to fire shots on goal in the third, once again outshooting the home side this time 13-4. They scored goals in the 11th and 18th minutes. Junior Taryn Raisanen scored the first and Mleko the second, her third point of the day.

Freshman Casey Frank secured the victory on the defensive end finishing the game with 16 saves and the victory.

The Thunder improve to 5-8-0 overall and 3-4-0 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play following the win. They will look for the sweep tomorrow, Saturday, January 14. Opening puck drop is scheduled for 4 p.m.
