Thunder's Strong Effort Not Enough

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University women's hockey team played another strong 60 minutes of hockey, but came up short of visiting Concordia University Wisconsin, who return home with a 4-0 victory after sealing the game with a pair of empty net goals.

The Falcons scored off an odd power play in the middle portion of the first period, scoring with a four-on-three advantage. They added a second goal later in the period to take a 2-0 lead into the intermission.

The Thunder offense would dominate the rest of the contest in everyway but on the scoreboard. The home team outshot the opposition in both of the final two periods but could not get the puck into the back of the net.

Desperate for a final spark of offense, the team pulled their goalie for the final four minutes of the contest. The plan backfired with Concordia Wisconsin scoring a pair of empty net goals to seal the victory.

Hannah Lambers led the team with six shots on goal, while Kailey Mleko finished second with four. In net Claire Schmaltz had 14 saves while allowing just the two goals.

Trine falls to 4-16-1 overall and 0-11-1 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play. They will continue their season by traveling to face Lawrence University for a pair of games. The first is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. CT on Friday, February 2.
