Thunder Scare St. Norbert in Opening Game of Playoffs

DE PERE, Wis. – The Trine University women's hockey team held a lead at the start of the third period but couldn't hold off second-seeded St. Norbert College, falling by the score of 3-2.

The Knights scored first in the contest, finding the back of the net in the 15th minute of the first period. The 1-0 lead lasted into the intermission and through the first half of the second period.

At the 12 minute mark of the second period St. Norbert committed their second penalty of the game, ending a power play opportunity of their own. The Thunder eventually started their own power play and took advantage of the opportunity in its final seconds. Gabrielle Hicks scored the goal with Grace Hicks and Kalli Graham adding assists.

Trine took the lead four minute later. This time Maisyn Shay scored, the first goal of the freshman's career. Dorka Gengeliczky and Sofia Koppa added assists on the goal. The 2-1 score lasted into the intermission.

The Knights scored the final two goals of the game. The first came in the opening minutes of the final period and the second with just four minutes left in the contest.

Ella Park played the game in net for the Thunder. She finished with 34 saves despite the loss.

Trine falls to 6-19-1 following the loss. They will face off with St. Norbert again tomorrow, Saturday, February 17 at 4 p.m. ET / 3 p.m. CT. Trine needs to win the game and then an additional mini-game to advance to the next round of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) Slaats Cup Playoffs.
