THUNDER DROP ROAD DECISION TO OHIO WESLEYAN

DELAWARE, Ohio - The Trine University women’s lacrosse team fell behind early to Ohio Wesleyan, trailing by nine at the half as they dropped a 20-8 decision on the road. The Thunder fall to 0-2 on the season.

After the Battling Bishops tallied the first goal of the game, Trine’s Emily Canepa (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West), a junior, scored her first goal of the season to tie the game. From there though, Ohio Wesleyan would go on a 9-0 run before senior Ashley Kocsis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) ended the drought for the Thunder at the 12:47 mark of the first half. The Battling Bishops scored twice more as the Thunder tallied the final goal of the half on a score by senior Shelly Raupp (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) as Trine trailed 12-3 at the break.

The two sides traded goals to start the second half before Wesleyan would again go on a run, scoring five unanswered goals late in the half.

Senior Emily Shreeve (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) ended the drought for the Thunder scoring the final goal of the game with just under two minutes to play in the game.

Kocsis led the Thunder with two goals while four other players each tallied a goal. Kocsis also led the Thunder in groundballs, five, draw controls, five, and caused turnovers, two.

In goal for the Thunder, freshman Grace Garret (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) started and played the first 30 minutes making three saves. Canepa came on in the second half to play the final 30 minutes while also making three saves.

The two sides were fairly even on the statistic side for the afternoon, the only exception came on the goal sheet. The Thunder forced 18 Wesleyan turnovers, while the Thunder committed just 13. The Battling Bishops held a slim 22-to-17 advantage on groundballs and 18-to-10 on draw controls. Trine was 8-for-12 on clearing opportunities while Ohio Wesleyan was just 12-for-20.

The major difference in the game for Ohio Wesleyan was their ability to convert on free-position shots as they went 7-for-9 while the Thunder were 0-for-4 in the game.

The Thunder were get right back at it as they host defending conference champion Adrian College on March 25 at 7:00 p.m.
