Thunder Defeat Defiance for First Win of Season

ANGOLA, IND.-- Five-straight goals to break open a tie paced the Trine women's lacrosse team to a 12-6 victory over Defiance Wednesday evening in Fred Zollner Athletic Stadium.

The Thunder broke open a three-all tie with a five-goal run late in the first half and the Yellow Jackets never got closer than four the rest of the way. The Trine trio of Taylor Gast (Akron, Ind./Tippecanoe Valley), Anne Mammel (Tecumseh, Mich./Tecumseh) and Darcy Little (Williamsburg, Ohio/Williamsburg) each scored three goals to lead the attack. Trine outshot Defiance 28-20. Grace Garrett (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) turned in another stellar performance in net, stopping 12 of 18 shots on goal. Trine improves to 1-2 on the season. Defiance falls to 1-6.

Hunter Johnson (Millbury, Ohio/Lake) added two goals and an assist for a three-point night. Lauren Hood (Austintown, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) added a goal for the Thunder. Trine held a 14-6 advantage in draw controls.

Alicia Carter and Jacqueline Burns each scored two goals to lead Defiance. Parker Smith and Karly Smith each added tallies. Carter picked up a team-high six ground balls. The Yellow Jackets held a narrow 16-14 edge in ground balls.

After battling to a 3-3 tie through the first 20 minutes of play, Trine took over late in the first half. Little scored an unassisted tally with 9:30 to play to give the Thunder a 4-3 lead and start the run. Gast, Little, Mammel and Johnson each scored in the final 4:03 of the half to send Trine into the break with an 8-3 lead.

A Burns goal on a free-position attempt cut the score to 8-4, but the Thunder rallied back for three-straight to push their lead to seven. Little, Mammel and Gast picked up the goals. Johnson picked up the assist on Mammel's tally. The 11-4 lead was the largest of the night for the Thunder.

Trine returns to action Saturday, Mar. 29 at 1:00 p.m. when they host Ursuline at 1:00 p.m. in Fred Zollner Athletic Stadium.
