Thunder Rally Late, But Fall in Double-OT

SOUTH BEND, IND.-- The Trine women's lacrosse team fought back from a three-goal deficit, but fell to St. Mary's 9-8 in double-overtime Friday afternoon at the SMC Lacrosse Field.

The Thunder scored three goals in 7:22 to fight back from a 6-3 deficit to force overtime. Each team scored twice in the overtime period to send the game to a second extra stanza, where Aubrey Golembieski's goal sent the Belles home victorious. Golembieski led SMC with four goals in the game. Taylor Gast (Akron, Ind./Tippecanoe Valley) scored four goals for the second-consecutive game to lead the Trine attack. She added an assist fopr her first-career five-point effort. Trine falls to 1-9 overall and 0-6 in the MIAA. St. Mary's improved to 2-10 overall, 1-4 in the conference. 

Gast scored three times in the first half to pace the Thunder to a 3-2 halftime lead. Two of those goals came on free-position attempts.

St. Mary's responded with four-consecutive goals over the first 22-minutes of the second half to take a 6-3 lead. Jackie Loesch scored two goals, while Golembieski and Sarah Neeser each added tallies of their own. Loesch's second goal put the Belles up three with 7:24 to play.

Trine would not go quietly, as the Thunder rallied back to force overtime. Megan Russ (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) scored her second goal of the season to pull TU within 6-4 with 5:01 to play. Just 24 seconds later, Darcy Little (Williamsburg, Ohio/Williamsburg) scored off a pass from Gast to cut the deficit to one. Lauren Hood (Austintown, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) scored the game-tying goal with 3:01 remaining to send the game to overtime.

Tess Guerrero and Gast traded free-position goals to make the score 7-7 with 3:57 remaining in the overtime period. Hunter Johnson (Millbury, Ohio/Lake) gave the Thunder the lead 50 seconds later, but Golembieski scored on a free position attempt with 1:10 left to force double-overtime.

Golembieski scored the game-winner just under two-minutes into the second overtime.

Grace Garrett (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) made 16 saves in goal for the Thunder. Stephanie Szymas turned aside 11 shots on goal for the Belles.

Trine returns to action Tuesday, Apr. 22 when they host MIAA-foe Hope on Senior Day. Game time is slated for 5:00 p.m.
