Women's Lacrosse Earns First Victory of Season

GREENCASTLE, Ind.-- Trine earned its first win of the season with a 12-6 victory over Wilmington (OH) in a neutral-site contest Saturday afternoon at DePauw University's Reagis Stadium.

Taylor Gast (Akron, Ind./Tippecanoe Valley) scored a career-high six goals to lead the offensive attack for the Thunder. Two of the senior's goals came on free-position attempts. Hunter Johnson (Millbury, Ohio/Lake) played a solid all-around game, scoring four goals and notching four ground balls, four draw controls and two caused turnovers. Rachel Routzong scored three goals to lead the Quakers. Trine improves to 1-1 on the season. Wilmington opens the new season 0-1.

Freshman Rebecca Plantz (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) notched the first points of her collegiate career for Trine, scoring two goals and picking up an assist. Trine outshot Wilmington by a 31-22 margin.

Gast scored the first three goals of the game in the first half. Loryn Bryson got Wilmington on the board, before Plantz picked up her first collegiate goal. The freshman wound her way through traffic after gaining a draw control, depositing a tough shot to make the score 4-1.

Wilmington scored two of the final three goals of the first half to cut the halftime score to 5-3.

The Thunder scored the first five goals of the second half to put the game out of reach. Gast and Johnson each scored two goals, while Plantz added her second tally of the afternoon. The five-goal run pushed the score to 10-3 with 18:26 to play.

Grace Garrett (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) earned the victory in net for Trine, making six saves to improve to 1-1 on the season.

Trine returns to action next Saturday, Mar. 14 when they travel to face Defiance at 5 p.m.
