BELLEVILLE, Ill.-- Trine scored two goals in the final minute of regulation to force overtime, and went on to earn 10-9 victory over NAIA-foe Lindenwood-Belleville Saturday evening.
The Thunder faced a 9-7 deficit after a three-goal run put the Lynx up two with just 2:54 to play. Trine fought back with two goals 18 seconds apart in the final minute to force overtime. Rebecca Plantz (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) pulled the Thunder within one with a minute to play, scoring off a feed from Taylor Gast (Akron, Ind./Tippecanoe Valley). The duo combined again on the next goal just 18 seconds later, only this time Gast scored off the pass from Plantz to knot the score 42 seconds on the clock.
Trine threatened again the final seconds, but had two shots ring off the post and the game headed to the extra period.
Plantz went to work with a great one-on-one move to score what would later prove to be her first-career game-winner early in the overtime stanza. Grace Garrett (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) later came away with a huge save to preserve the 10-9 victory.
Gast led the Trine attack with four goals, while Plantz came up big with her first-career three-goal effort. The freshman has now scored multiple goals in each of the last three games. Garrett made a season-high 15 saves in a superb effort in net. The Thunder improved to 3-1 with the victory.
Nikkolette Makaryk (Joliet, Ill./Minooka) notched her first-career multi-goal game. Elena Gallego (Norwalk, Calif./Santa Fe) scored her first-career goal just under 10 minutes into the contest.
India Cyr led Lindenwood-Belleville with four goals. Hillary Karch added three goals, while Kendall Colston accounted for the other two. The loss dropped the Lynx record to 2-4.
Each team had 33 shots on goal. Lindenwood-Belleville held a 49-30 edge in ground balls.
