Thunder Drop Season-Opener at Hanover

HANOVER, Ind.-- The Trine women's lacrosse team was unable to overcome a slow start in its season-opener, as the Thunder fell to Hanover 12-8 Thursday afternoon. 

The Panthers scored the first nine goals of the contest and held an 8-0 lead at the half. Cassie Hendrickson scored seven goals and added two assists to lead the way for Hanover. Rachel Davis added five tallies as the two players combined for all of the Panthers' goals. Bailey Brown (Sheridan, Ind./Westfield) notched her first career three-goal game to lead the Trine attack. The junior added two ground balls and a pair of draw controls. The Thunder open the season 0-1. Hanover improved to 2-3 on the year.

Rebecca Plantz (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) tallied two goals, while Anne Mammel (Tecumseh, Mich./Tecumseh) added a multi-point effort with a goal and assist in her return to the team. Kayla Tracy (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) scored her first career goal and Elena Gallego (Norwalk, Calif./Santa Fe) added the final Thunder tally.

Hanover outshot Trine by a 29-25 tally, though the Thunder held a 17-11 advantage in outscoring the Panthers 8-4 in the second half. The Panthers held a 21-17 edge in ground balls.

Caity Rose (Hamilton, Ind./Hamilton) made 11 saves in her first-career start in goal. Counterpart Amanda Mousa made eight saves for the Panthers.

Hanover outshot Trine 18-8 in the first half to open up an eight-goal lead at the break. Hendrickson scored four-straight goals at one point for the Panthers. A pass from Hendrickson to Davis made the score 9-0 in the opening minute of the second half.

Tracy started a five-goal Thunder run with her first-career goal with 28:37 to play. Two goals by Brown and single tallies by Plantz and Mammel cut the score to 9-5 with 21:33 to play.

The Thunder would cut the deficit to four again when Plantz's second goal cut the score to 10-6 with 11:14 remaining. Two-straight goals by the Panthers halted Trine's comeback attempt and put the game out of reach. Brown and Gallego added the final Thunder tallies.

Trine will now return to action Friday, Mar. 11 at Transylvania. The game has been moved up from Saturday, Mar. 12 to tomorrow night at 6 p.m.
