Thunder Battle Belles Tough in Road Loss

SOUTH BEND, Ind.-- The Trine women's lacrosse team battled Saint Mary's tough, but fell to the Belles 10-4 in MIAA-action Tuesday evening.

Rebecca Plantz (DeWitt, Mich. / DeWitt) tallied a season-high three goals to pace the Thunder attack, while Elena Gallego (Norwalk, Calif. / Santa Fe) added the other Trine goal. Plantz added four ground balls. Gallego also collected a ground ball and caused one turnover. Claire Theisen scored five goals to pace SMC, while Kate Kelly added three goals as each player surpassed the 30-goal total on the season. Trine fell to 0-7 overall, 0-3 in the MIAA. Saint Mary's improved to 6-5 overall, 3-0 in conference play.

Whitney Shaffer (Tipton, Ind. / Tri-Central) tied a school-record, scooping up a team-high 11 ground balls. Shaffer's hustle helped Trine collect a teamn-high 30 ground balls in the game. She also matched a career-high with four caused turnovers for the second straight game.

Caity Rose (Hamilton, Ind. / Hamilton) added 12 saves in net for the Thunder. It was the fifth time Rose has recorded 10 or more saves in a game this season.

Plantz's first goal of the contest came on a free-position attempt and knotted the score up at one-apiece with 17:58 to play in the first half. Her second goal cut the deficit to 4-2 just before the half.

Gallego scored an unassisted tally to keep the Thunder within two at 5-3 early in the second half. Plantz's final tally came on a free-position attempt to cut the score to 7-4 with 10:50 to play. The goal came in a man-up situation.

Theisen scored twice, while Kelly added another tally as the Belles put the game out of reach in the final 10 minutes.

SMC outshot Trine by a 30-18 margin and held a 44-30 edge in ground balls. Emilie Vanneste added a pair of goals for the Belles.

Trine travels to Adrian this Saturday, Apr. 16. Game time is slated for 3 p.m.
