Women's Lacrosse Shuts Out Olivet for First MIAA Win

Angola, Ind. – Trine's women's lacrosse team defeated Olivet, 17-0, in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association game Thursday evening at Fred Zollner Athletic Stadium.

Trine recorded its first shutout victory in program history with tonight's win. Bailey Brown (Sheridan, Ind. / Westfield) led Trine's offensive attack with a seven-point game. She scored a career-high five goals and had two assists. Elena Gallego (Norwalk, Calif. / Santa Fe) added to the offense with her five goals. She now has 31 goals on the season, tied for fifth-place in goals in a season in team history.

Laura Rosekrans (Williamston Mich. / Williamston) contributed to the offense with two goals and two assists. Rosekrans set a school record with seven caused turnovers to lead the suffocating defensive effort.

Khrystyna Thompson (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Blackhawk Christian) and Ashli Sanders (Eaton Rapids, Mich. / Olivet) both picked up their first career goal in today's win. Thompson added six ground balls, four caused turnovers and an assist. She now has 22 caused turnovers on the season, the fourth-most in team history. Thompson is now second in the MIAA in caused turnovers.

Audrey Poteet (Indianapolis, Ind. / Ben Davis) was credited the win with her first career shutout performance in net. Poteet had five saves. She needs 13 saves to set the school single-season record.

Trine collected 31 ground balls to Olivet's 16 and outshot the Comets by a 35-9 margin. The Thunder was successful in 11 of its 16 clear attempts. Trine held the Comets to a 7-22 on its clear attempts.

In the opening seconds of the first half the Thunder jumped to a quick lead over the Comets. Samantha Ihrie (Kendallville, Ind. / East Noble) scored the opening goal coming from an assist by Brown. Seconds later Rosekrans dished Anne Mammel (Tecumseh, Mich. / Tecumseh) the ball for another goal. Gallego scored for the Thunder less than a minute later. Thompson scored her first career goal when she scored on the break to put Trine up four goals in the first four minutes. Rosekrans put the Thunder up 6-0 when she scored back-to-back goals, one coming from an assist by Brown. Sanders notched another goal for Trine when she scored from the middle for her first career goal.

At the 22-minute mark of the first half, Gallego scored her second goal of the game. Mammel notched her second goal of the game halfway through the first half. Brown and Rosekrans switched roles when Brown scored her first goal of the game coming from an assist by Rosekrans. Seconds later Brown scored her second goal of the game. In the closing minutes of the first half Gallego scored the last two goals of the half, with Lilly Dusek (Zionsville, Ind. Zionsville) assisting on one of them. Trine led Olivet 13-0 going into the second half.

In the first four minutes of the second half Brown notched her third goal of the game. At the 20-minute mark Gallego scored her fifth goal of the game. Less than a minute later Brown scored her fourth goal putting Trine up 16-0 over the Comets. With nine minutes left in the game, Brown marked her goal tally to five in the game.

Trine improved to 3-9 overall and 1-4 in MIAA play. Olivet fell to 0-12 overall, 0-7 in conference play.

Trine will return to action Saturday, April 22, when it travels to Albion. The game is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
