Thunder Come Up Short in Season Opener

ADA, OHIO -- The Trine University women's lacrosse team was defeated by Ohio Northern University by the score of 15-8.

The Polar Bears took the first lead of the contest, pulling ahead 2-0 in just the third minute of the game.

The Thunder would respond with three straight goals of their own to take the 3-2 lead with 19 minutes remaining in the first half.

Senior midfielder Rebecca Plantz (DeWitt, Mich.) finished the contest with two goals, tallying both of them in the streak that gave the Thunder their first lead of the contest. She added the team lone assist of the contest on a goal in the second half to finish the game with three points.

Ohio Northern would tie the game at three with 15 minutes left in the first half, but Trine would respond and take back the lead just a minute later. Freshman attacker Kristin John (South Bend, Ind.) scored the goal giving the Thunder their second and final lead of the contest. John would finish with a team-high three goals in her Trine debut.

The Polar Bears would go on an eight-goal run to end the first half and begin the second, taking a commanding 11-4 lead. The Thunder would mount a late comeback attempt in the last 14 minutes of the contest but were unable to close the gap eventually falling by the final score of 15-8.

Senior Samantha Ihrie (Kendallville, Ind.) was the third multi-goal scorer for the Thunder, finishing the contest with two goals. Her, and the team's, final goal of the contest was a spectacular coast to coast affair. She finished the contest with two goals.

Junior Audrey Poteet (Indianapolis, Ind.) got the start in goal for the Thunder and finished the contest with 19 saves.

Trine will once again hit the road on Wednesday, February 23, when they take on Wilmington College in a 5 p.m. contest.
