Trine Falls Short in Home Opener

ANGOLA, IND. – The Trine women's lacrosse team opened home play for the year coming up just short against Benedictine (Ill.) College, falling by the score of 9-7.

Senior Rebecca Plantz (DeWitt, Mich. / DeWitt) once again led the way for the Thunder finishing with a career high six goals in the game. That mark is tied for second most goals in a game by a Thunder women's lacrosse player on record.

Plantz's first two goals came just 14 seconds apart and gave the Thunder the early 2-0 lead with just under 28 minutes remaining in the first half. But Trine was unable to score another goal in the half and the Eagles would score four to enter the intermission leading 4-2.

Benedictine would score first in the second and would go on to score three times in the first six minutes of the half. Plantz would add the lone Thunder goal in that stretch and the Eagles would take the 7-3 lead for their biggest lead of the game.

With 17 minutes left in the game, Plantz would score two goals in under twenty seconds for the second time in the game to pull the Thunder within two. Senior Samantha Ihrie (Kendallville, Ind. / East Noble) would add her lone goal of the game just minute later and Trine found themselves trailing by only one goal, 7-6.

They would get no closer as the two teams would trade goals once before the Eagles finished off the scoring in the contest taking the 9-7 lead with seven minutes remaining in the game.

Junior Audrey Poteet (Indianapolis, Ind. / Ben Davis) once again got the start in net for the Thunder and finished the game with 14 saves. Trine falls to 1-2 on the season with the loss.

The Thunder will look to bounce back on Saturday, March 10 when they travel to take on Earlham College in a 1 p.m. contest.
