Thunder Come Up Short in Season Opener

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Trine University women's lacrosse team traveled to face Concordia University Ann Arbor in their first competition of the 2019 season. The Thunder kept it close throughout the contest but ultimately fell in the contest 11-8.

The Cardinals took the early lead picking up three goals in the first ten minutes for the 3-0 lead.

Trine scored their first goal of the season with just over fifteen minutes left in the first half. Junior Lilly Dusek (Zionsville, Mich.) came up with the goal. Dusek would lead the way for the Thunder in the game tallying four goals by herself.

The team closed the gap to one two minutes later when sophomore Kristen Nguyen (Locust Grove, Ga.) came up with her first goal of the season with an assist from captain Lauren Hall (Hartford City, Ind.).

Concordia pulled back to a three-goal lead with two goals in four minutes.

Hall responded for the Thunder with a coast to coast goal, her lone of the contest, coming with just under six minutes remaining in the half. It was the final goal of the half and the team would enter the intermission trailing 5-3.

The Cardinals scored first again to start the second. Nguyen added her second goal of the contest in response. For the rest of the half, both teams traded two-goal streaks, until Concordia ended the scoring with a goal in the final six minutes of the contest. The goal gave the opposition their final three-goal lead at 11-8 and Trine would return home with the loss.

Sophomore Emily Morthorst (Fort Wayne, Ind.) played in net for the Thunder and finished the game with nine saves.

Trine will continue their season with their home opener on Saturday, March 2 against Earlham College. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
