Second Half Offense Lifts Thunder Over Ravens

ANDERSON, Ind. -- The Trine University women's lacrosse team scored eight in the second half to pull away from host Anderson University and return home with the 14-8 victory.

The Thunder opened the scoring in the contest just two minutes into play when sophomore Kirstin John (South Bend, Ind. / St. Joe's) came up with her first goal of the game. Freshman Theresa DiMaggio (Shelby Township, Mich. / Henry Ford II) added an assist on the tally.

Both teams would go scoreless for the next ten minutes of play before the Ravens found their first goal of the contest.

The Thunder responded with a four-goal streak over the course of six minutes to take a commanding 5-1 lead. John and classmate Shea Rayburn (Attica, Ind. / Attica) both tallied two goals during the stretch.

Anderson came back with a three-goal stretch of their own to pull back within one before Trine closed out the scoring in the period with a goal from DiMaggio and the team would enter halftime up 6-4.

The Ravens opened the scoring in the second period with a goal in the third minute of play. The team would then trade a goal apiece to end up at 7-6 with 15 minutes remaining in the contest.

The Thunder then went on their largest run of the night scoring six straight over the next ten minutes to pull ahead to a commanding 13-6 lead. Four different members of the team came away with goals during the stretch, with freshman Peri Darmofal (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Homestead) and captain Lauren Hall (Hartford City, Ind. / Blackford) joining John and Rayburn, with their first goals of the contest.

Darmofal would score another later in the period as the Ravens scored two and the Thunder left the field with a 14-8 victory.

John led the way for the Thunder offensively scoring six goals and adding an assist. DiMaggio led the team with a pair of assists.

In goal Emily Morthorst (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Homestead) picked up another win for Trine with six saves. She faced minimal shots in the contest as the Thunder defense showed up strong with a balanced defensive attack with eight members of the team coming up with at least one caused turnover. The team as a whole finished with 12.

The Thunder improve to 3-1 following the victory. They will travel to face Heidelberg University on Saturday, March 16 in their next contest. Opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m.
