Women's Lacrosse Tames Bulldogs 18-7

ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Trine University women's lacrosse team picked up their first win of the season with an 18-7 victory over visiting Adrian College.

The Bulldogs struck first in the contest, taking a 1-0 lead in the second minute of play, it would be their only lead of the day.

Thunder junior Liv Ghent (Byron Center, Mich. / Caledonia) gave the team their first goal to tie the game at 1-1. Freshman Danielle Gargiulo (Downers Grove, Ill. / Downers Grove) followed up in the fourth minute of play to give the team a 2-1 lead. Both goals came on free-position attempts.

From there Trine added two more goals to build the lead to 4-1 at the halfway point of the first period. After a lone goal for Adrian in the 18th minute, the team picked up another three goals to pull away further at 7-2. The two teams would then trade goals over the final ten minutes of the half to end the period with the Thunder leading 9-4.

Trine continued to build their lead in the second half scoring the first three goals of the period before going on another four-goal run in the latter part of the half. They would end the game with an 18-7 win.

Ghent would lead the team with five goals including the eventual game-winner which game in the first half. Gargiulo came in second with four goals and senior Kristen Nguyen (Locust Grove, Ga. / Luella) finished third with three. Senior Shea Rayburn (Attica, Ind. / Attica) was the final multi-goal scorer with a pair. Rounding out the scoring for the team was sophomore Ella Dougherty (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell), senior Kristin John (South Bend, Ind. / St. Joe's) and freshmen Nikki Hibler (West Lafayette, Ind. / Harrison) and Alyssa Keptner (Midland, Mich. / H.H. Dow) each with a goal.

Nguyen led the way for the team with four assists while Gargiulo came in just behind with three.

In net the Thunder split time between junior Jillian Rejczyk (Wauconda, Ill. / Wauconda) in the first half and senior Emily Morthorst (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Homestead) in the second. Rejczyk finished the contest with the win.

Following the win, Trine improves to 1-1 overall. They will head to face Alma College on Wednesday, March 3 with the opening draw set for 7 p.m.
