Belles Pull Away from Women's Lacrosse in Second Half

ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Trine University women's lacrosse team trailed by just two at the intermission but were outscored by six in the second half to fall to the visitors from Saint Mary's College by the score of 20-12.

After falling behind 1-0 in the opening minutes the Thunder took a lead in the contest with 17:37 remaining in the half at 2-1. Freshman Nikki Hibler (West Lafayette, Ind. / Harrison) came up with the goal to give the team the lead.

The Belles responded by scoring the next four goals of the game to take back the lead and build it to 5-2. The Thunder cut it back down to a one-goal deficit with just over a minute remaining in the half with a 3-1 run, but a last-minute goal from the opposition sent the team to the locker room down 7-5.

Saint Mary's came out of the intermission on a tear scoring nine goals to Trine's two over the first twenty minutes of the period to build a 16-7 lead. The Thunder only pulled back within six before the end of the game and ultimately lost 20-12.

Junior Liv Ghent (Byron Center, Mich. / Caledonia) led the way for the team offensively scoring three goals in the game and assists on three others. Three others finished the game with two goals each, they were senior Kristin John (South Bend, Ind. / St. Joe's), senior Kristen Nguyen (Locust Grove, Ga. / Luella) and freshman Alyssa Keptner (Midland, Mich. / H.H. Dow).

The Thunder fall to 5-5 overall and 1-2 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play. The team will return to the field on Saturday, April 10 when they host Hope College for another MIAA contest. The game is set to begin at 4 p.m.
