Rain-Soaked Game Goes to Wooster 12-11 in Overtime

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University women's lacrosse team suffered an overtime defeat on Wednesday in the driving rain that delayed the game for around one hour in the second quarter 12-11 to the College of Wooster. The Scots remain undefeated at 7-0, while the Thunder fall to 4-2 overall.

The first period was all Thunder as the home team went up 5-1 through 15 minutes. Liv Ghent [Byron Center, Mich. / Caledonia] and Chloe Vruno [Geneva, Ill. / St. Francis] found the back of the net in the first two minutes of action, and Brooke Hoag [Portage, Mich. / Portage] and Alyssa Keptner [Midland, Mich. / H.H. Dow] each added on to the lead. Ghent netted her second goal just before quarter's end to make it 5-1 Trine.

A string of three consecutive Wooster goals gave momentum to the visitors from the Buckeye state before the pair of Ghent and Vruno struck again. Vruno scored off a feed from Ghent to go up 6-4 before the heavy rain, lightning and thunder fell upon Angola.

Ghent scored coming out of the delay, but three straight once more by the Scots tied the game at 7 midway through the third. With just seven seconds remaining in the quarter, Ghent scored a free-position goal to give her four on the evening and put Trine up 8-7.

Wooster took their first lead of the game with 11:46 left with back-to-back goals. A penalty allowed the Thunder to go one-up and Calista Richmond [Portage, Mich. / Portage] found Hoag for the game's tying score.

Just under five minutes to play, the Scots took a 10-9 advantage, however it was Richmond playing hero late with two goals at 3:32 and 2:35 to put the scoreboard in favor of Trine, 11-10. Moments later, Wooster tied the game at 11 with a goal at the 1:37 mark. A defensive stop and save by goalie Jillian Rejczyk [Wauconda, Ill. / Wauconda] sent the game to overtime.

In the sudden death period, the Scots utilized a Thunder turnover in their own defensive zone to gain position and scored the game-winner.

Ghent's four goals led the way for the Trine offense, while Rejczyk had 15 saves in net, a new career-high. She also accumulated a team-high six groundballs. Brooklyn Sosinsky [Carmel, Ind. / Carmel] tallied four groundballs and caused turnovers.

The Thunder travel to Wartburg College for their next game, the final non-conference contest of the season, on Sunday, March 27 at 1 pm EST.
