Trine Has Trouble Against Hope College

HOLLAND, Mich. – The Trine University women's lacrosse team was defeated by Hope College on Tuesday afternoon 20-5 in their second consecutive road contest in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play.

The Thunder are now 3-4 overall and 0-2 in conference action. The Hope Flying Dutch are an even .500 at 5-5 and remain unbeaten in MIAA play at 2-0.

A difference of 21-7 in draw controls allowed Hope to gain possession of the ball for a majority of the contest. The Flying Dutch would go on to outshoot Trine 40-12. Groundballs were fairly even at 10-9 in favor of the home team.

A quick start for Hope would put them ahead 4-0 before the Thunder would get on the board. Junior Danielle Gargiulo netted her first of three goals on the day with just over five minutes remaining in the first quarter, the final score for both teams in the period.

The Flying Dutch tacked on five to begin the second quarter to extend their lead to 9-1. Sophomore Brooke Hoag scored unassisted to spark a flurry of goals just before half. Hoag's would be the only one on Trine's side as the team went into the break with an 11-2 deficit.

Gargiulo would convert the only score for the Thunder at the 6:42 mark in the third, but by quarter's end, the scoreboard read 18-3. The team's split goals in the fourth quarter with two each. Freshman Alyssa Lahutsky joined Gargiulo in finding the back of the net near the end of the allotted time.

Sophomore goalkeeper Maddy Kasten (3-4) made 12 saves and secured two groundballs. Sophomores Paige Hull and Calista Richmond as well as senior Alyssa Keptner had three caused turnovers.

After a brief hiatus from Shive Field, Trine returns to action on their home turf on Friday, April 14 when Kalamazoo College comes to Angola at 7 p.m.
