Trine Stuns Albion in Overtime

ALBION, Mich. – The Trine University women's lacrosse team used a massive comeback to top Albion College 10-9 in overtime on Wednesday night. The Britons took a commanding 6-0 lead after the first quarter, but it was not enough to put away the feisty Thunder squad.

After going scoreless for over 20 minutes of game time, junior Courtney Rhodes found the back of the net twice to cut the Albion lead to 6-2, however one more for the home team before the halftime break made the score 7-2.

Three in a row for Trine in the third quarter helped them continue to chip away. Sophomore Elizabeth Larson, junior Brooke Hoag and senior Alyssa Keptner had scores during the run to help get to the 8-5 mark through three periods.

Hoag and junior Calista Richmond made it a one-goal game at 8-7 with back-to-back scores to start the fourth. Albion used a man-up opportunity to produce a ninth goal, but Larson would do the same when the Thunder found themselves on the optimal end of a Briton yellow card. Trailing by one, Keptner used a free position attempt with just over one minute remaining in regulation to net the game's tying goal and send the game to overtime.

In the extra period, Richmond found a cutting Keptner for the game-winning goal to make Trine 8-3 overall and 2-0 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play. The Britons fall to 4-6 on the year and 1-1 inside the conference.

The team's goalkeeper junior Maddy Kasten (7-3) made six saves in net and held Albion to just three goals in the final three quarters and overtime period. Keptner paced the offense with three goals, however Larson, Hoag and Rhodes had two apiece. Larson and freshman Claire Schmaltz picked up four ground balls each. Larson led the way with five draw controls while Schmaltz caused a team-high three turnovers.

The road trip continues for the Thunder on Saturday, April 13 at Alma College beginning at 1 p.m.
