Thunder Place 7th in Mid-States Invitational

OLIVET, Mich.-- Trine placed seventh in the Mid-States Invitational, held Saturday at Cutler Event Center.

Thunder wrestlers earned the team 46.5 points with their performance. Leading the way with a third-place finish at 141-lbs was Jeffrey Helm (Westfield, Ind./Westfield). Michael Conner (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville) notched a fourth-place finish. David Moore (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) and Austin Helm (Westfield, Ind./Westfield) added seventh-place finishes. Wabash won the team championship with 191 points.

Jeffrey Helm won three of his four matches to place third. Two of those victories came by pin, including his victory in the third-place match. The freshman has now won 15 matches this season. Austin Helm picked up a win by major decision in the seventh-place match of the same class.

Conner went 3-2 on the day to improve his record to 28-12 overall. Conner's first win of the day came by pin in the closing seconds of the first period. The junior's other two wins both came by decision. He was narrowly defeated by eventual-winner Jared Groeneveld, 2-1, before dropping into wrestlebacks.

Moore finished 2-2 in the tournament to earn his seventh-place finish. The freshman now has 14 wins. He earned a victory by 8-2 decision, and won the seventh-place match by sudden-victory.

Kevin Groves (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) added a pair of wins on his way to finishing eighth in the 165-lb match.

Trine returns to action Saturday, Feb. 28 at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional. The top three finishers in each class will advance to the National Championships in Hershey, Pa. The Midwest Regional is being hosted by Wabash College.
