OLIVET, Mich.-- The Trine wrestling team finished with a 1-2 record in duals Saturday as the Thunder competed in the Olivet College Comet Duals at Cutler Athletic Center.
Trine earned its win in convincing fashion, taking down Case Western Reserve 32-18. The Thunder also battled no. 7 Wisconsin-Whitewater, falling by a 27-19 final, and fell to Grand Valley State, 24-23 in a tightly contested match. Jeffrey Helm (Westfield, Ind./Westfield) won all three of his matches on the day to lead the Thunder in the 141-lb. class. David Moore (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) won both of his matches at 125 lbs. to give Trine two undefeated wrestlers on the day.
Helm outscored his opponents 28-10 to win two matches by decision and one by major decision. He did not allow any of his opponents to score more than four points in any of his matches. Helm improved his personal mark to 4-2 on the season, with two of those wins coming by major decision.
Moore outscored his opponents 26-6 over the course of his two matches, including a 15-0 tech fall in his first match of the day to lead the Thunder to its victory over Case. The sophomore also picked up an 11-6 win by decision. The performance gives Moore a winning record at 5-4 on the season.
Michael Conner (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville) also picked up a pair of victories for Trine and finished the day 2-1 overall. Both of the senior's victories came by major decision as he outscored his opponents 23-4 in his two wins. The 197-lb performer has a team-leading eight victories this year.
Kevin Groves (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) picked up Trine's lone pin on the day, which came against GVSU. Three of the sophomore's four victories this season have come by fall.
Caleb Maddox (Russiaville, Ind./Western), Zach Krumlauf (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) and Joe Stasiak (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn) each finished the day 1-1 for the Thunder.
The performance leaves Trine with a 1-2 record in duals on the season. The Thunder return to the mats Saturday, Dec. 5 at the Ohio Northern Invitational.
