Maddox, Jensen Victorious as Thunder fall to Olivet

ANGOLA, Ind.-- The Trine wrestling team was defeated by Olivet 37-6 in a dual Thursday night in Hershey Hall.

Caleb Maddox (Russiaville, Ind./Western) earned Trine's first victory of the night by defeating his opponent, 4-3. Olivet wrestler Jared Brickley scored the first points of the match with a double-leg takedown, but Maddox answered back quickly with an escape to end the first period down 2-1. In the beginning of the second period, Maddox hit a quick stand-up to get the escape and tie the score 2-2. He ended the period with a single-leg takedown at the buzzer to end the second period up 4-2. Maddox held his opponent to one point in the third period to get the victory.

Jaycee Jensen (Burns Harbor, Ind./Chesterton) earned Trine's second victory of the night by defeating his opponent 3-1 in overtime. In the first 20 seconds of the second period, Jensen's effort led to an escape to score the first point of the match and end the period up 1-0. Halfway through the third period, Olivet wrestler Jacob Harvey answered with an escape to the the score 1-1 and send the match to overtime. With 10 seconds left in the overtime period, Jensen scored on a single-leg cradle to takedown to win the match. 

The Trine wrestling team hosted its inaugural Military Appreciation Night tonight. Local veteran Tom Davis of Fremont served as an honorary captain for the Thunder. Davis competes in marathon-distance hand-cycling races. He has won the Disabilities Division of the Detroit Marathon four straight years. Davis lost most of his left leg while serving as a staff sergeant in Iraq in 2006.

The team had all 10 weight classes sponsored by campus and community organizations. All money raised tonight will be donated directly to Achilles International Freedom Team of Wounded U.S. Veterans.  More information on the team's efforts to benefit Achilles will be available Friday.

The Thunder return to the mats when they travel to Elmhurst College for the Al Hanke Invitational, Jan. 16, 2016. Matches will begin at 11 a.m.
