NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind.-- The Trine wrestling team was defeated by Manchester 31-11 in a dual match Friday night at Stauffer-Wolfe Arena.
The Thunder got victories from Caleb Maddox (Russiaville, Ind./Western), Brandon Gay (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) and Joe Stasiak (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn) in the match. Trine fell to 1-14 on the year in duals. Manchester improved to 3-8.
Gay won perhaps the most exciting match of the night by 16-14 decision over Tristan Wilson. The freshman faced a deficit for most of the match after falling behind early. Gay fought back behind a furious flurry of reversals and takedowns in the final period to come back to earn the victory. The victory was the third of the season for the 165-lb wrestler.
Maddox picked up his victory in dominating fashion, earning a 13-2 win by major decision. The freshman earned points for near-falls twice in the match. Maddox has been rolling of late, winning four of his last five matches. The 133-lb'er has a team-best 18-10 mark on the year.
Stasiak dominated his opponent in the heavyweight division. The junior scored a 17-4 victory by major decision. Stasiak picked up his eighth victory of the season. This is the first season Stasiak has competed as a heavyweight.
David Moore (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) nearly overcame a deficit in the third period, but his reversal wasn't quite enough to overcome the riding-time advantage held by his opponent.
Trine returns to the mats Friday, Jan. 29 at Wheaton College's Pete Willson Invitational. The meet traditionally features a strong field of nationally-ranked wrestlers.
