Three Wrestlers Victorious, but Thunder Fall to No. 2 Wabash

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine wrestling team was defeated by No. 2 Wabash 41-15 in their last home dual of the season Thursday night in Hershey Hall.

Caleb Maddox (Russiaville, Ind./Western) earned Trine's first win of the night with a pin in the first period. Maddox struck first with an outside single-leg takedown in the first minute of the first period. With 21 seconds left in the period, Maddox turned Wabash wrestler, Allen Betts, to his back to pin Betts with a headlock finish.

Jeffrey Helm (Westfield, Ind./Westfield) earned the second Thunder win of the night with a 6-1 decision win over his Wabash opponent, Jacob Stevenson. The first two minutes of the first period started with a scramble for position. With 45 seconds left in the period Helm was able to top Stevenson for position to get the first takedown of the match. The period ended with Helm leading 2-0. Half way through the second period Stevenson was able to escape from Helm, ending the period with the score of 2-1. With a minute left in the third period Stevenson let Helm escape where Helm attacked right away, getting another takedown with seconds left in the period.

Joe Stasiak (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn) earned the third win of the night with a defensive pin in the third period over his Wabash opponent, Paul Synder. The first two minutes of the period was a constant hand fight for underarm control. With a minute left in the period, Stasiak hit a blast double for the takedown, ending the period 2-0. Snyder was able to ride out Stasiak the whole second period to keep the score 2-0 going into the third. Half way through the third period, Stasiak was able to secure his position while in headlock to defensively pin Synder.

Trine's wrestling team recognized its senior class of Austin Helm (Westfield, Ind./Westfield) and Michael Conner (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville) prior to the match. Conner had a high of 29 wins his junior year and finished his career with a 65-44 record before suffering a season-ending injury earlier this year.

The Thunder return to the mats when they travel to Ohio Northern University for the Mid-States Invitational Feb. 13, 2016. Matches will begin at 10 a.m.
