Alma Slides Past Wrestling in Season Opener

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine wrestling was defeated by Alma, 26-17, in its season opener Saturday morning in Hershey Hall.

Caleb Maddox, Jeffrey Helm and Jaycee Jensen all had a strong showing for the Thunder, picking up where they left off last year. Trine falls to 0-1 and Alma advances to 1-0.

Brendan Ladd for Alma scored the first team points of the dual with a pin over Brendan Stevens in the third period.

Drew Clark had a forfeit for the Thunder to tie the team score back up at 6-6.

Jeffrey Helm (Westfield, Ind./Westfield) took the quick lead in his match going up 4-1 in the first period. In the second period Helm went right back where he left off in the first by going up 7-1 by an escape and takedown. Helm went on to score another takedown after DeRossett got the escape early in the third period. Helm went on to win the match by a major decision with riding time 10-2.

Caleb Maddox (Russiaville, Ind./Western) scored the first takedown of the match to put him up 2-0 going into the second period. Maddox went to work in the second period scoring a takedown and back-points. Maddox went on to win 13-0 by a major decision with riding of four minutes and 43 seconds. The Thunder went up 14-6 in the team score.

Jared Fleming made the team score 14-9 with his 8-4 decision win over Nick Miller (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider).

A forfeit for the Scots put Alma up 15-14 going into the 174 weight class match.

Taylor McPhail with an 11-2 major decision with riding time over Trevor Allbert (Morris, Ill/Morris) puts Alma up 19-14 in the team score.

Trent Hullett had 16-2 a major decision with riding time over Austin Farrell (Hopkins, Mich./Allegan). Alma continued with the lead 23-14.

The first period remained a deadlock between Jensen (Burns Harbor, Ind./Chesterton) and Chance Smith. Jensen quickly scored a reverse to go up 2-0, he ended the second period being up 8-3. Jenson went on to win by an 8-4 decision and scoring Trine three team points to put Trine behind by six going into the last match of the dual.

Aaron Kelly had a 5-3 decision win over Joey Stasiak at heavyweight (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn).

 Alma won the dual 26 to 17.

The Thunder returns to the mats when they host the Trine Invitational Saturday Nov. 12. Matches will begin at 10 a.m.
