Wrestling Defeats Milwaukee School of Engineering at the Chicago Duals

CHICAGO, Ill.—The Trine wrestling team went 1-2 at the University of Chicago Duals on Saturday. The Thunder defeated the Milwaukee School of Engineering, 34-15.

Brendan Stevens (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview) and Austin Farrell (Hopkins, Mich./Allegan) each went 3-0 on the day. Stevens defeated his Dubuque opponent at 125 pounds and received forfeits from University of Chicago and Milwaukee School of Engineering. Farrell won his first two matches at 174 pounds by close decisions and pinned his last opponent. Stevens improved to 11-6 this season and Farrell's three wins put him at 9-11. Trine moves to 3-9 overall.

Trine opened the day by facing Dubuque. Stevens put the Thunder on the board first with a 10-3 decision over Javier Guilen. Dubuque took back the lead after Trine forfeited at 133 pounds. The Spartans won the next four weight classes before Farrell notched a 7-6 decision over Roosevelt Smith. At 197 pounds, Anthony Neal (Sturgis, Mich./Sturgis) pinned Dominic Sterr in 4:28. Dubuque won the dual 34-12.

Against the University of Chicago, the Thunder and the Maroons traded forfeits back and forth at 125 and 133 pounds to tie the team score through two weight classes. Farrell earned Trine's other win at 174 pounds when he defeated Nicholas DiNapoli in overtime, 6-5. The Maroons defeated Trine, 38-9.

In its match against the Milwaukee School of Engineering, Stevens won by forfeit before both schools forfeited at 133 pounds. Jeffrey Helm (Westfield, Ind./Westfield) picked up his first win of the day at 141 pounds when he pinned Jimmy Cushman in 2:31. Caleb Maddox (Russiaville, Ind./Western) picked up six more points for the Thunder with a win by forfeit at 149 pounds. At 165 pounds, Luke Carver (Sturgis, Mich./Sturgis) pinned Ryan Snyder in 2:06. Farrell followed with a pin of his own in 49 seconds over Garrett Gross. Jaycee Jenson (Burns Harbor, Ind./Chesterton) notched the Thunder's final win of the day at 184 pounds with a major decision over Josh Lang, 13-3.

The Thunder returns to action next weekend at the Budd Whitehill Duals at Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pa.
