WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.—The Trine wrestling team completed day one of the Budd Whitehill Duals at Lycoming College on Friday afternoon. The Thunder was handed losses by No. 8 Messiah (45-4), SUNY Cortland (40-9) and Williams (40-9).
Austin Farrell (Hopkins, Mich./Allegan) and Caleb Maddox (Russiaville, Ind./Western) each picked up two wins on the day.
Against Messiah, Trine forfeited the first three weight classes. The Falcons won the next three matches before Farrell put the Thunder on the board with a 13-2 major decision over Tyler Hershey.
In its second dual of the day, Trine took on SUNY Cortland. The Red Dragons opened with a win at 125 pounds and picked up wins by forfeit at 133 and 141. Maddox picked up a 10-8 decision at 149 pounds over Greg Chery. At 184 pounds, JayCee Jensen (Burns Harbor, Ind./Chesterton) won by forfeit.
To wrap up its day, the Thunder faced Williams in its last match. The Ephs won the first three weights by forfeit, but Maddox picked up his second win at 149 pounds with an 11-8 decision over Alex Pankhurst. At 165 pounds, Brandon Gay won a 15-12 decision over Luke Anselmi. Farrell's second win at 174 pounds came by way of the first tiebreaker against Carl Sangree, 4-3.
