Trine Wrestlers Compete at North Central (Ill.) Invitational

NAPERVILLE, ILL.  --  The Trine University wrestling team traveled to Naperville, Ill. to compete in the North Central (Ill.) College Invitational and finshed 14th overall in the team standings.

The Thunder finished the event with 16 points to finish 14th of 15 teams.  Wabash College finished as the top team in the standings with 167 points.  Olivet (Mich.) College was second with 92.5 points and host school North Central was third at 73 points.

Individually, Trine had one wrestler place in his weight class in sophomore Luke Carver (Sturgis, Mich./Sturgis) at 184 pounds.  After receiving a bye, Carver won his first two matches by technical fall and decision to advance to the semifinals.  Following a defeat in his semifinal match by major decision, Carver rallied in the semifinal match of the consolation bracket to defeat Olivet's Ryan Clark by major decision, 14-2, and advance to the third-place match.  In the match, Carver was defeated by pin against Ethan Cain of the University of Dubuque (Iowa) to finish fourth.

The Thunder also had a competitor win a pair of matches in his respective weight class in freshman Sam Burge (Niles, Mich./Niles-Brandywine) at 184 pounds.  After falling in his first match by pin, Burge then won his next two matches by major decision against Zach Stefanich of MSOE (10-1) and in a tiebreaker against Wasley Barnes of Alma (Mich.) College.  He would lose his final match of the day to end the event with a 2-2 record.

Trine will travel to Lexington, Va. to compete in the Washington & Lee University Duals on Monday, Dec. 18.  The day is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
