ALMA, MICH. -- Sophomore Nick Miller (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider) was the lone wrestler to place in his respective weight class to lead the Trine University wrestling team at the unscored Alma (Mich.) College Open.
Miller competed in the 174-pound weight class and placed fifth overall finishing with a 2-2 record on the day. After receiving a first-round bye, Miller defeated Ronnell McGhee of Muskegon Community College by decision, 3-1, to advance to the 174 semifinals. Miller then dropped his next two bouts before claiming a win against Olivet (Mich.) College's Kamyab Kamali by an 11-6 decision in the fifth-place match.
Also finishing with a 2-2 record for the event was freshman Ethan Simmons (Scotts, Mich./Climax-Scotts) at 285 pounds. Simmons captured his first match by pinfall, defeating Mike Frias of the University of Toledo in a time of 1:01. After losing his next match via a pin, Simmons rebounded with his second pin of the tournament, this time against Brock Johnson of Muskegon Community College in a time of 2:41. He then came up short in his final match by a 10-4 decision against Ohio Northern University's Austin Keeley.
