Trine Wrestlers Complete First Day of NCAA Central Regional

CRAWFORDSVILLE, IND.  --  The Trine University wrestling team traveled to Crawfordsville, Ind. to compete in the two-day NCAA Division III Central Regional Meet hosted by Wabash College and advanced two individuals to tomorrow's action after the first day of competition.

As a team, the Thunder are currently in 15th place with 20 points.  Baldwin Wallace (Ohio) University and the University of Mount Union (Ohio) are tied in the team standings with 76 points each.

Individually, Trine will have two wrestlers advance to tomrrow's competition, led by sophomore Luke Carver (Sturgis, Mich./Sturgis) who wrestled his way to the semifinals in the 184-pound weight class.

Carver began the day with a technical fall against Wesley Barnes of Alma (Mich.) College, 16-0.  He went to face Cash Thompson of Ohio Northern University and won by a narrow 2-0 decision to get to the semis.  Carver will face Hunter Bates of Wabash where a win would put him in the title match.

Sophomore Anthony Neal (Sturgis, Mich./Sturgis) also advanced to day two of competition at 197 pounds.  Neal captured a win in his opening match of the tournament agianst Heidelberg (Ohio) University's Chase Morrison by a 4-3 decision before falling to Ken Burrs of Waynesburg (Pa.) University by an 8-3 outcome to drop to the consolation bracket.

In his first bout of the consolation bracket, Neal defeated Alex Roberts from Manchester University via major decision, 11-2, and advances to the consolation quarterfinals where he will take on Gavin Dersh-Fisher of Case Western Reserve (Ohio) University.

Tomorrow's (Saturday, Feb. 24) action will begin with the championship semifinals that are scheduled to start at 10 a.m. at Knowling Fieldhouse in Crawfordsville.
