Graplers Finish Eighth at Trine Invitational

ANGOLA, IND.  --  The Trine University wrestling team finished eighth at the Trine Invitational at the Keith E. Busse/Steel Dynamics Athletic and Recreation Center in Angola, Ind.

Trine ended the event with 62 points to finish eighth of 13 teams.  North Central (Ill.) College finished first with 149.5 points and was followed by Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opponent Olivet (Mich.) College in second with 127 points.  Wheaton (Ill.) College rounded out the top-three with 100 points.

Highlighting the tournament was a third-place finish by junior Luke Carver (Sturgis, Mich./Sturgis) in the 184-pound bracket.  Carver began his day with a 17-2 tech fall victory against Dylan Seaton of Alma (Mich.) College and then followed that with a 6-1 decision against Robert Granberry of Olivet.  Carver fell in his next match via a pin where he would face Hiram Robinson (Olivet) for third place.  In the match, Carver needed just 19 seconds to pin his opponent to claim third place.

Also posting a strong showing was senior Caleb Maddox (Russiaville, Ind./Western) who placed fourth in the 141-pound bracket.  After a first-round bye, Maddox won his first two matches via a 9-2 decision and a 14-2 major decision against Kaden Darbro of Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) University.  Maddox then fell in a close 4-3 decision to Tanner McHugh of Baldwin Wallace (Ohio) University before falling to Dalton Leightner, also of BW, by tech fall in the third-place match to finish fourth overall.

Junior Austin Farrell (Hopkins, Mich./Alleghan) finished with a 4-2 record at 197 pounds and finished sixth overall.  Farrell captured his first two matches beginning with an 8-3 decision and then a 17-6 major decision win agsint Issa Khalil of Wilmington College.  Following a pin that put him in the consolation bracket, Farrell worked his way into the fifth-place match that included a pair of pinfalls against Logan Roberts (Wheaton) and Khalil who Farrell defeated in his first match of the afternoon.  In the fifth-place match, Farrell took on Tyler Vittal (North Central), but fell on the losing end of a 9-4 decision to finish sixth.

Sophomore Ethan Simmons (Scotts, Mich./Climax-Scotts) went 2-2 on the day that included two pins in the consolation bracket against teammate Zach Saylor (Anderson, Ind./Anderson) and Kobe Hicks (Indiana Tech).

Trine will host the Thunder Quad next Saturday, Nov. 17 with the day set to begin at 10 a.m.
