Trine Finishes Sixth at ONU Invitational

ADA, OHIO  --  Two wrestlers finished as runners-up in their respective weight classes as the Trine University wrestling team placed sixth overall at the Ohio Northern University Invitational in Ada, Ohio.

The Thunder finished with a total of 86.5 points to finish sixth of 13 teams.  Washington & Lee (Va.) University captured the team title with 128 points and Heidelberg (Ohio) University was second at 119 points.  Host school Ohio Northern rounded out the top-three teams with 115.5 points.

Individually, senior Caleb Maddox (Russiaville, Ind./Western) and junior Luke Carver (Sturgis, Mich./Sturgis) highlighted the day with a pair of runner-up finishes.

Maddox placed second overall in the 141-pound weight class and posted a 3-1 record on the day.  After receiving a "bye" in the first round, Maddox won by pin in his first match against James White of Adrian (Mich.) College in a time of 2:55.  He then went on to record back-to-back wins by decision before narrowly falling to Tiffin University's Hunter Langeloh in the championship match by a 7-5 decision.

Carver won all of his matches by pinfall in his 184-pound weight class en route to having a 3-1 record for the tournament.  Carver opened competition with a pin against Adrian's Zach Reynolds in a time of 2:32.  He then defeated Jarrod Setliff from Otterbein (Ohio) University in a time of 1:57 and posted his third pin of the afternoon against Devon Pingel from Adrian in a time of 4:17 to advance to the championship match.  Carver faced Dylan Roth from Heidelberg in the title bout, but would fall on the losing end of a 19-2 outcome to take second.

Junior Nick Miller (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider) finished with a 5-2 mark at 174 pounds and began the tournament with a pair of victories with a 14-7 decision in his first match and then won by forfeit before suffering a 6-0 decision to fall to the consolation bracket.  Miller captured his first match in the consolation bracket with a pin against Andrew Taylor from Washington & Lee.  He won his next match by a 16-5 major decision, but then fell by pinfall en route to facing Joseph Vondrasek from Alma (Mich.) College in the fifth-place match.  In the match, Miller needed 3:21 to defeat Vondrasek by pinfall to claim fifth place.

Freshman Brent Booth (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow) placed sixth at 197 pounds.  After a "bye," Booth defeated John Butler of Thomas More (Ky.) College by pin in a time of 4:12.  He dropped his next match to fall to the consolation match where he won his next two bouts by a 18-14 decision and a 4-1 decision before falling in his next match and then took on Otterbein's Braden Neuberger for fifth place.  Booth ended up falling in the fifth-place matchup by pin to finish in sixth overall.

Trine will next compete in the North Central (Ill.) College Invitational next Saturday, Dec. 8.  The event is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. (CST) in Naperville, Ill.
