Wrestlers Compete at NCAA Central Regional

ADRIAN, MICH.  --  The Trine University wrestling team competed in the annual NCAA Division III Central Regional hosted by Adrian (Mich.) College at the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center in Adrian, Mich.

The Thunder finished with 22 team points to place 14th of 18 teams.  Baldwin Wallace (Ohio) University finished as the team champion with 154 points.  The University of Mount Union (Ohio) was second at 146 points and Wabash (Ind.) College was third with 121.5 points.

Trine had two wrestlers place in seniors Luke Carver (Sturgis, Mich./Sturgis) and Nick Miller (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider).  Carver was sixth overall in the 184 pound bracket and Miller was seventh in the 174-pound bracket. 

Despite falling in his first match, Carver then rattled off three-straight victories that began with an 18-0 tech fall against Abe Spurlock from Ohio Wesleyan University.  He won his second match, also by tech fall, against Daylan Schurg from Wabash by a score of 16-0.  He then captured his third straight shutout victory with a 1-0 decision against Aidan Whitis of John Carroll (Ohio) University.  Carver suffed a loss by pinfall in his next match, setting up a bout against Mount Union's George Lassnick for fifth place.  Against Lassnick, Carver would fall by a score of 10-0 to finish sixth.

Miller fell in his first match by pinfall, but then won his next two match starting with a 13-5 major decision against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association foe Erik Arnegard from Alma (Mich.) College.  His win set up a bout against Vittorio Santillo of John Carroll and won by a 6-4 margin, but lost his next match putting him in the seventh-place match against Bryant Moore from Adrian (Mich.) College.  Miller took the seventh-place bout in a one-point decision with a final score of 2-1.
