Wrestling Has Six Named NWCA Scholar All-American

ANGOLA, IND.  --  Six members of the Trine University men's wrestling team were recognized for their efforts in the classroom as Scholar All-Americans by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.

Seniors Nevan Freestone (Frankfort, Ind./Clinton Prairie), Jacob Garrett (Colfax, Ind./Clinton Prairie), Cordell Camp (Waterloo, Ind./Garrett), Dominic Pecoraro (Carmel, Ind./Carmel), Riley Rasler (LaGrange, Ind./Prairie Heights) and freshman Joseph Langeman (Carmel, Ind./Carmel).  A total of 413 student-athletes from 84 NCAA Division III schools were selected to the Scholar All-American Team.

Freestone, a chemistry major, ended the 2020-21 season with a 6-5 overall record, primarily in the 149-pound weight class.  His six victories were tied for fourth on the team.  Two of his individual wins were by pinfall and he led the team in decisions with four.  Highlighting the season was a fourth-place finish at the Adrian (Mich.) College Invitational and captured fifth place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Individual Championships.

Garrett majors in biology and recorded two wins on the mat which both came by way of a pin.  One of those pins came in a dual meet against Manchester University in early February and the other came against Olivet (Mich.) College at the MIAA Team Duals back on Feb. 13. 

Camp, civil engineering major, finished the season with four victories.  Camp recorded a pin, a tech fall, a major decision and one decision.  He finished sixth overall at the Adrian Invitational in which he finished 1-3 overall.

Pecararo saw limited action during the season with two bouts, but finished winless on the year.  In the classroom, Pecararo is a marketing major.

Rasler also saw limited action and went 1-1 on the year at 141 pounds with his lone win coming by way of a 6-4 decision in the match against Olivet as part of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Team Duals in February.  

Langeman recorded four wins in his first year as a member of the Thunder wrestling team.  Two of his victories were by major decision with the remaining two wins being by decision and a forfeit.  Highlighting his "rookie" season was a fourth-place finish at the Adrian Invitational and seventh at the MIAA Individual Championships.

"In what has been a trying season for all, I'm excited to recognize these talented athletes who stayed the course in the classroom and continued their pursuit of excellence as they work toward their degrees," said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer. "The NWCA and our Board of Directors remain committed to honoring outstanding academic performance and would like to thank the coaches, support staff, and administrators at these institutions for their commitment to their student-athletes ."
