NORTH MANCHESTER, IND.-- The Trine women's soccer team used a solid defensive effort and a second half goal to defeat Manchester, 1-0, Tuesday afternoon at Spartan Field.
Jamie McCarrell's (Jackson, Mich./Jackson) goal in the 70th-minute provided the only scoring the Thunder would need. Skyler Reed (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll) made five saves to preserve the shutout. Manchester outshot Trine by a 19-11 margin and produced three corner-kick opportunities to one for the Thunder. Trine improves to 2-1 on the season. The Spartans fall to 0-3. The Thunder have won three of their last four matches against Manchester.
The two teams battled to a scoreless draw through the first 70 minutes, before McCarrell got the Thunder on the board at the 70:07 mark. The goal was McCarrell's first-career game-winner, and her first goal of the season. The junior has now scored three goals in her Trine career.
Reed's five saves gave the junior her first-career shutout. Reed has a .778 save percentage through three starts this season.
Trine will host Kalamazoo next Monday, Sep. 8 at 4:00 p.m. The match will be the home-opener and MIAA-opener for the Thunder.
