OLIVET, MICH.-- Olivet scored the first two goals of the match, and that was enough to defeat Trine, 2-1, in MIAA-action Saturday afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex.
Isabelle Leon scored a goal and added an assist for a three-point night to lead the Comets to the victory. Lauren Vanderhoff added a goal for Olivet. Skyler Reed (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll) scored a goal to move into fifth in scoring in the Division-III era at Trine. The Comets outshot TU by a 16-14 margin. The Thunder fall to 4-9-3 overall and 2-8-3 in conference play. The Comets improve to 5-10-2 overall, 2-10-1 in the MIAA.
Leon put the Comets on the board at the 12:49 mark with her eighth goal of the season. Olivia Gardner and Emily Reinecke picked up the assists. Leon entered the game second in the conference in overall scoring with 19 points.
Vanderhoff added what would prove to be the game-winner just over three minutes into the second half. Leon and Brooke Leach picked up the assists.
Reed scored an unassisted goal to cut the OC lead to 2-1 with 15:30 to play. The goal gave the junior 19 career points, which rankes fifth in the Division-III era at Trine. Reed now has eight career goals.
Deanna Zolnoski made seven saves in net for the Comets. Kristina Veljovic (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) stopped a career-high nine shots for Trine.
The Thunder will host Albion this Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 4 p.m. at Weaver Field.
