Women's Soccer Drops MIAA-Opener

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-- The Trine women's soccer team dropped its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opener to Calvin, 2-0 Wednesday afternoon at Zuidema Field.

Sydney Kinney scored both goals in the first 16 minutes of the match to provide all the scoring the Knights would need. Calvin goalkeepers Brianna Koehn and Holly Ellerbroek combined on the shutout as each keeper played 45 minutes and made one save. Kristina Veljovic (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) made a season-high seven saves in net for the Thunder. Trine fell to 1-2 on the season, 0-1 in MIAA matches. Calvin improved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

Kinney scored her first goal 6:53 into the contest on a rush up the left wing. Emily VanVeldhuizen picked up the assist. Kinney scored her second goal nine minutes later, getting off a shot in the box off a low cross from Paige Capel.

Carly Osinski (Noblesville, Ind./Guerin Catholic) got off two shots to pace the Trine scoring attack. The Knights outshot the Thunder by a 23-4 margin.

Trine returns to action this Saturday, Sept. 12 at Kalamazoo. The match is slated to begin at noon.
