Thunder Drop Close Match to Hope

ANGOLA, Ind.-- The Trine women's soccer team came up on the short end of a defensive battle as the Thunder fell to Hope, 1-0 in MIAA-action Monday afternoon at Weaver Field.

Erin Brophy scored the lone goal of the match in the first half to provide the winning margin. The Thunder became the first team to hold the Flying Dutch to under three goals in a match this season. Hope entered Monday's match averaging 3.6 goals per contest. Kristina Veljovic (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) played a superb game in net for Trine, finishing with nine saves. The Thunder fell to 1-4 overall, 0-3 in the MIAA. Hope remains unbeaten at 6-0 overall, 3-0 in conference matches.

Brophy's goal came after Rachel Demarigny sent a long cross into the box from the left wing. Brophy connected with the ball right on the doorstep for the lone goal of the match at the 30:09 mark of the first half.

Veljovic and the work of Trine defenders kept the Thunder in it. Included among Veljovic's saves was a leaping, one-handed punch that directed the ball over the net.

Hope outshot the Thunder by a 23-2 margin. Mary Clare Theis made one save to earn the shutout.

Trine returns to action this Saturday, Sept. 17 when the Thunder travel to Saint Mary's for a 4 p.m. match. The match will be held at Jr. Irish Soccer Club on Airport Field #6.
